Mission / Vision

MISSION

The mission of the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy (ICIEE) is to serve to achieve healthy, comfortable and productive indoor environments with minimal energy consumption. The activities focus on three critical issues:

1. Impact of indoor environment on health, comfort and performance of people (including buildings and vehicles)

2. Development and study of advanced and energy efficient systems for heating, ventilation, and cooling of spaces

3. Dissemination of results through papers, conferences, education and standardisation

VISION

ICIEE will be the world leading research centre on indoor environment and energy. ICIEE will provide planners and producers of buildings and HVAC systems with criteria, methods and tools for achieving an optimal indoor environment by design and during operation of  low energy buildings and energy efficient HVAC systems.

ORGANISATION

ICIEE is a research and dissemination organisation. The main activities of the Centre are to perform research projects within the areas specified under the vision and mission. At the moment all research projects from the Indoor Climate section belongs to ICIEE; but projects from other sections of BYG can also be a part of ICIEE. The advantage for the individual researchers to be a part of the ICIEE is the International recognition. As a strong group with many high quality publications there will be more visibility. This will increase the possibility to get international (and probably also national projects), easier to become partner of other international projects and attract other top researchers.

Also people from outside BYG and DTU can be included in the Centre if they are involved in some of the research projects.

To administrate ICIEE, keep contact with industry and guide the Centre the following functions are formed:

• Centre director

• Centre scientific secretary

• Centre administrative secretary and WEB-master

• Centre committee

• International advisory committee

Teaching is the responsibility of the sections within BYG. People working on research projects under ICIEE will, however, also be involved in teaching and planning of courses.

A draft organisation diagram with suggested responsible persons is included.

COMMITIES

Centre Committee

The Centre committee consist of the Director, scientific secretary, administrative secretary, sponsors and representatives from industry (consultants, HVAC societies etc.).

The role of the committee is to:

• Provide guidance on existing issues

• provide guidance on research needs

• provide guidance on dissemination

• give input from the user side (consultants, manufacturers etc).

• be a forum for discussion of common interest (increase awareness, political issues, etc.

• Others

The committee shall meet 3-4 times a year. Chair of the committee is the director.

International advisory committee

This committee consisted for the first 10 years of three professors (Jack Spengler-Harvard, Bill Nazaroff-Berkeley, S. Murakami-Keio University). This committee should be reorganised and extended with one or two persons with expertise in HVAC systems, building physics, architect and/or medical expert. They should meet each 1-2 years. During these meetings the existing and future research program is discussed among others the Ph.D. students give a presentation with time for discussion of their projects.

RESEARCH

The Centre is a research centre and consists of a group of research projects led by individual project leaders. The Centre will make a research plan; but is very much depending on the focus on different funding authorities. The research consists of projects under Danish and International research programs, projects funded by national and international foundations and research funded by industry. Besides the centre is be involved in a certain number of industry commissioned projects. The centre also participates in international research networks like IEA (International Energy Agency), COST etc.

A new important activity is to be involved in government support. This is a mix of information gathering, dissemination and research.

Budget

The budget consists mainly of the research projects, which are administrated by the project leaders. Each project leader is responsible for the projects (scientifically and budget wise). We will however also look at the overall budget and if needed and possible one project may support another project for a limited time. Then the Centre needs a general budget to maintain the general operation of the Centre. This includes maintenance, renovation and/or addition to the research facilities (climatic chambers, instruments), secretarial and technical support. This can partly be included in some of the projects using the general facilities as hourly costs for using instruments and chambers, salary to support staff, etc. The sponsor money and the overhead obtained from the projects will go into the general fund of the Centre.

Industrial sponsors

ICIEE has 3-4 industrial sponsors (Exhausto, Lindab, System Air,) who each donate a yearly amount of money (normally over a three year period). This is to support general activities (travel to conferences, invitation of guest student, new instruments and by exception small projects). The existing sponsors are mainly companies manufacturing ventilation and/or control systems. This could be extended to other type of companies like consultants, building component manufactures etc. (Rockwool, Velux, Widowmaster, Alectia etc. ) The companies will get a seat in the Centre committee.

The sponsors will get the following benefits:

• Link on our web-site

• Allowed to advertise that they sponsor ICIEE in brochures or web-sites

• Visit ICIEE-DTU with guests (costumers etc.) including seminar and guided tour

• Internal seminar by ICIEE researchers for employees and costumers

• First information on research projects and preliminary results

• First information on submitted abstracts and papers

• Meetings with ICIEE researchers to discuss general trends and future plans

• Others

DISSIMINATION

An important task of the centre is dissemination of the research results and being involved in making the results available for the users. In all publications of research projects related to ICIEE the Centre must be listed in the affiliation to increase the awareness of the centre. This is done through the following activities:

• WEB site

• Education

• Publication

• Conferences and seminars

• Membership of national and international organisations

• Standardisation

WEB-site

The Centre will have its own web site  www.ie.dtu.dk . This will include a public part, a sponsor part and an internal part. This must be our main face to the outside.  The web-site shall include:

• Public part

• CV’s and publication lists for all members

• List with abstracts of research projects

• Publications, where several should be downloadable

• List of master Thesis

• List of PhD student projects

• Links to sponsors

• Links to organisations

• List to relevant conferences

• Others?

• Internal part

• Travel activity Calendar

• List of researchers with profile

• PPT presentations

• Video presentations (post cast)

• Master Thesis

• Submitted abstracts and papers

• Submitted research proposals

• Others?

• Sponsors part

• Minutes of meetings

• List of researchers with profile

• PPT presentations

• Video presentations (pot casts)

• Master Thesis

• Submitted abstracts and papers

• Others?

EDUCATION

The education at DTU courses is not the responsibility of the Centre; but the persons involved in the Centre research must also be involved in lecturing. The Centre will however be involved in other form for external education like:

• Summer courses (PhD or master level)

• Industrial training

• External courses by other organisations (DANVAK, ASHRAE, REHVA etc.)

PUBLICATIONS

All publications based on research from the Centre must include in the affiliation: International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy, Technical University of Denmark.

A certain number of ISI publications must be published/submitted each year. But also conference proceedings and other Journals should be used for publications. It is important also to write “popular” articles about the research, which can be used in trade journals or other non-scientific publications.

Conferences and seminars

To participate in congresses are also important for networking and dissemination of results. It should, however, be coordinated within the Centre.

Membership of national and international organisations

This is also an activity for dissemination and networking. Again this should be coordinated within the Centre.

Standardisation

An efficient but time consuming way is to be actively involved in international standardisation. This can help to get the results in the hand of users and can also help to identify new research needs. The problem is to finance this activity as it will have travelling costs.

Internal communication

One of the advantages working in a group of researchers is the possibility of internal discussions of projects and issues. Everybody cannot be involved in all projects and everybody cannot be involved in all discussion meetings. WE must find a way of informing each other about projects and activities and then between related projects cross discussion meetings can be arranged on an ad-hoc basis. We shall continue to have “Friday” presentations of ongoing and upcoming projects. At the moment the Indoor Climate section has faculty meetings every second Monday, where ICIEE projects but also teaching is discussed.
